Artist Statement

Having previously completed Hello World merely the night before, I decided to find a way to highlight the piece with projection mapping. In order to do so, I had to find a mapping format using MadMapper that would make the video central and the largest piece, as well as leave the sound in. Hello World is very audio-centric despite it having only one diegetic noise in the entire piece. The projected version of this I chose to title Hello World 2.0 as that was the name of the folder I kept all of my files in for this piece.

Alongside this file, I also had three gifs. One was a video-edit of what I call the ‘wire pulling sequence,’ edited to appear to glitch more. The second gif was a few quick-cuts between the shots of the drop-cloth being pulled and the lights of a parking garage. The last gif was a self-animated gif of the main antagonist of Hello World, aptly named “Boxman.”

The animated gif, though only lasting roughly two to three seconds, took around three hours to make. The first part of the clip had no reference images or videos; the only reference I had was literally feeling how I danced and attempting to animate that. The second half of the gif where the full-body is shown is a non-rotoscope animation of my boyfriend dancing. I had him send me a video of him dancing, and from there I watched the video and animated what I saw.

Ideally, if I could do this piece again, I would love to find a way to set the Boxman costume up on a mannequin and do some of the gif projection on that. I also wish I could have made the audio louder, but since I was not the only one in the area and the audio loops, I cannot make the audio any louder without sacrificing the sanity of my classmates.
