Project 3 Artist Statement
Cartoon Intro is a virtually untitled piece. This is a thirty second segment that is intended to be an intro to the cartoon I am building with Malachi. This entire piece was done using adobe animate and took around a month, partially due to the fact that I was in other classes at the time. This piece was done at 12fps as opposed to my usual 24fps because I wanted to give the cartoon a true cartoon feel to it.
This cartoon intro underwent very little planning and brainstorming, allowing a lot of creative freedom. The style this cartoon is based on is the style of animation used in Adventure Time, a popular cartoon. The lines are all very basic and lack sharp angles, which initially was very difficult to animate, as for every line had to be exact, meaning each line was drawn multiple times to ensure it was perfected. Similarly, with 12fps, there is less room for “messy” frames as each frame is shown for a significant amount of time relative to animation. This is supposed to have an Adult Swim feel to it as the style is childish and playful, but the subject matter is slightly more mature.
The only guidelines for the cartoon up to this point was GTA (as in the video game), and adventure time style animation. The character design of the dog was also worked through with Malachi; he had come up with a design years prior and this was my rendition of it for the cartoon. This intro is supposed to come before the title sequence.
