Artist Statement
This is a drawn frame by frame looped animation done on Adobe Animate, the video is made using Premiere Pro. The song used is Stairs by Tunde Adebimpe.
I chose to create a piece at first just for the sake of creating, however upon starting the work, I realized instead I would go deeper into why I create, and why I create the way I do. My grandfather, Joseph Lloyd Cox III is the reason I got into art, and the reason I pursue it so adamantly. He passed when I was in fifth grade. He was a wonderful soul, and he and his wife, Barbara Ann Cox showed me love and support one could only dream of. Growing up, especially growing up black, you learn just how much those who came before you fought tooth and nail for you to get to where you are today, and I wanted to allude to that, specifically on my mother's side. While I did receive loads of support from my father's side as well, my mother's side is where I get my artistic streak from, and why I am now in college for art. My father's side I attribute to my love for academic knowledge, and why I always strive to be smarter. Both sides of the family gave me an intense work ethic, a no-nonsense attitude when it comes to jobs and standing up for others, as well as an athletic streak. On my mom's side, my mom, uncle, and grandfather were extremely talented track athletes.
Similarly, both sides made sure that at the very least, on an intimate scale, I knew where and who I came from, and to always protect and own that identity.
