One of the most recent things that has taken over the internet is the concept of NFT’s so for my fourth reading blog, I chose to read an article about an NFT gallery led by women in LA called Vellum LA. Going into this, I had little to no understanding of what NFT’s were; I assumed they had something to do with artwork, and that was about as far as my knowledge of them went. I saw references to them popping up on my Tik Tok feed, some videos being of creators attempting to make their own NFT’s (which I didn’t know was possible at the time), some just mocking the confusion of others regarding NFT’s. I had just assumed they were a hybrid between cryptocurrency and digital art, and I was somewhat correct.
A link in the article “Women-Led NFT Gallery Vellum LA is Transforming How We Experience Art,” led me to a page explaining NFT’s. In short, they are a form of sellable (but not tradable or exchangeable) items that are only available on the internet as they contain a code that makes them unique. The example given in the article was: imagine you have the original copy of a book; if somebody gives you an exact copy of the words and the cover and title, it still is not nearly as valuable as the original.
So, this women-led gallery features NFT artwork; this is the digital art equivalent of displaying the original Starry Night and Mona Lisa. It displays real, invaluable work, and this art combines the traditional gallery setting with technological innovations.
